Strawberries
The epitome of summer, a bowl of fresh strawberries and a generous helping of cream. This extremely versatile fruit can also be enjoyed in summer puddings, smoothies and even be made into jam. These juicy summer fruits are at their best when freshly picked. Why not try one of the ‘pick your own’ growers located within Ceredigion. This will allow you to enjoy the wonderful countryside, and give the feeling of achievement, with a punnet of self picked strawberries at the end of it. For the less energetic amongst us why not try your local ‘farm shop’ or ‘farmers market’.
Mackerel
It is a fantastic sight to watch the bottle nosed dolphins chasing the shoals of mackerel into the bay at New Quay on a warm summer’s day. It is not only the dolphins that can take advantage of fresh New Quay mackerel, why not try it for yourself, available from your local fish monger or from the harbour at New Quay. Ceredigion is renowned for its abundance of fresh fish, with Mackerel being one of its most famous. For the full benefit of their delicious flavour Mackerel is best eaten on the day that it is caught. It can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, smoked, stuffed, grilled or even on a summer barbecue. A really heavenly addition to your diet, high in healthy Omega 3 fatty acids.
Tomato
The tomato is readily available during the summer months, but it is difficult to compare the flavourless varieties that we have all bought from our local supermarket with the succulent home grown variety. If we search out our local producer your taste buds will thank you for it. Fresh, juicy tomatoes can be used in salads or in Italian cooking to create pizzas, soups and pasta sauces. Enjoy!
